Shinogu Narita walked into his family’s apartment. It was Wednesday afternoon, a day he dreaded the most. He dreaded it more than most people dreaded Mondays. He sighed and took off his shoes and headed into his room.
His room was bare and unadorned. All that remained was his bed, desk and some books. His bed was freshly made. He smiled. Mom just can’t let go, Shinogu thought. He always felt guilty about having his own room when he knew Hatsumi and Akane wanted their own space. Maybe one of them will get this room now. Hopefully, Hatsumi. The thought of all her things in his room, her sleeping in his bed, the hours she’d spend daydreaming filled Shinogu with a warmth that spread through his whole body. Except she’d be dreaming about Ryoki, who was coming over in about 20 minutes.
Shinogu snapped out of his thoughts. Two hours of sitting in this room with that insufferable brat. How am I going to sit in here and not beat him up? It’s bad enough that Hatsumi has a boyfriend but Ryoki Tachibana? Of all the guys out there, why him? He hit her in front of other people. God knows, Shinogu thought, what he does when no one else is around.
Shinogu felt tired and worn out, emotionally and physically. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could take things. School, work, Hatsumi and Ryoki, the investigation. He looked at his bed. Did he have time for a catnap? No, Ryoki always showed up on time, usually early so he could see Hatsumi before his “lesson”. And then they’d leave (a few minutes within each other) afterwards. Who do they think they’re fooling, Shinogu thought.
Where is Hatsumi? The only thing that gets me through Wednesday is knowing I’ll see her. Even if it’s for a couple of minutes, even if it’s with Ryoki. Maybe she’s with him now. Shinogu sighed for what felt like the millionth time since they started going out.
If only I could tell her, if only I could have her. Those thoughts were a running mantra in Shinogu’s mind ever since he could remember. He wondered if it would ever end, and for most part, he didn’t want it to.
There was a knock at the door. Shinogu stiffened and headed out of room to the front door. He sighed and opened the door.
“Mrs. Tachibana! What are you doing here?”
